A Tragic Shift Only 12 Months Has Made in America

Twelve months back, the environment was utterly separate. Ahead of the US presidential election, reflective residents could admit America's deep flaws – its injustices and inequality – however they still could perceive it as America. A democracy. A country where legal governance held significance. A state led by a honorable and ethical public servant, even with his older age and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, many of us hardly identify the country we inhabit. People alleged as undocumented migrants are collected and shoved into transport, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition for an obscene dance hall. Donald Trump is persecuting his adversaries or alleged foes and requesting legal authorities surrender an enormous amount of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are deployed to US urban areas on false pretexts. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has effectively liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends what could amount to nearly $1tn in public funds. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are submitting from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are handled as nobility.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, commented recently. “In the end, more quickly than I believed likely, it did happen here.”

Each day begins to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and painful to realize – just how far gone we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

However, we know that the leader was duly elected. Even after his highly troubling first term and despite the cautions linked to the knowledge of Project 2025 – following the leader directly stated openly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans selected him instead of his Democratic opponent.

As terrifying as the present situation are, it's more frightening to realize that we have only been nine months into this administration. Where will three more years of this downfall position us? And suppose that timeframe transforms into a more extended duration, because there is no one to stop this president from opting that additional tenure is essential, possibly for national security reasons?

Admittedly, all is not lost. We will have congressional elections next year that could bring a different political equilibrium, if Democrats retake either chamber of Congress. There are public servants who are attempting to exert some accountability, for example Democratic congressmen currently initiating an inquiry concerning the try to fund seizure from the justice department.

And a leadership election three years from now could initiate us down the road to recovery just as last year’s election set us on this regrettable path.

There are numerous residents marching in public spaces across municipalities, like they performed recently in the No Kings rallies.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is stirring”, exactly as before following the Red Scare during the fifties or during the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Watergate scandal.

During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

Reich says he understands the indicators of that awakening and notices it unfolding at present. As support, he cites the recent massive protests, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to agree to the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists asleep until specific greed grows too toxic, some action so contemptuous of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that it has no choice other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value Reich’s experienced view. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

Meanwhile, the crucial issues endure: can America return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its standing in the world and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is true; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, though, advises me that we need to strive, through all methods available.

In my case, as an observer of the press, that involves encouraging reporters to adhere, more thoroughly, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For others, it might involve working on political races, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to defend electoral access.

Less than a year ago, we lived in a separate situation. Twelve months later? Or after another term? The truth is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is try to not give up.
