A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The successful offer for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which runs locations across the country and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," stated the business owner, a notable participant at the annual January sale.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is renowned for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition surpasses his own historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to surpass his own record yet again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.

The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.

"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one satisfied customer.
